Why a plastic storage box?

Why not a metal storage box. Or a wooden storage box. How about one made out of wire mesh? And lets not forget cardboard storage boxes. After all, if cardboard is good enough to ship consumer electronics like televisions and computers, why should you look anywhere else for your quick shoe and toy storage needs?

The answer to all this lies in the versatility of plastic as a material. Even if we discount the large number of designs and colors that these boxes come in, their popularity is undeniable. Plastic, the material they are made out of lends them a lot of edge over baskets and boxes made out of other materials.

Wood swells when exposed to water and it is a problem that even the best treated wood that is used in homes faces - imagine what the one that a container is made out of goes thorough! Cardboard has similar problems with water and moisture which makes it for lack of a better word, unusable at times. Sure you can get cardboard boxes that are coated in cellophane or plastic wrap, but then isn't it too much of a bother? Certain kinds of metals make great waterproof boxes but they are expensive and require rubber gaskets and other embellishments to work that way.

Plastic on the other hand, is water proof, extremely cheap and is quite sturdy. Any of these qualities can easily be altered by simply choosing what grade or quality of plastic you are using.

Anything more than just 'made out of plastic' ?

Of course there is. The amazing variety that is available when it comes to plastic storage boxes and the bigger and larger plastic storage containers. There are an infinite number of combination you could order a plastic storage solution in and that is really is something because the variety itself provides you with enough options to create a way to organize you life that compliments your specific and personal taste and interior décor.

Everything from plastic filing cabinets to plastic drawer inserts for the spoons and forks in you kitchen is a result of the versatility that the material and the inherent strategy behind it offers.

Everyones uses plastic storage boxes…

Even my grandmother used one when she sent across my birthday cake from across the country this year. The term shoebox when used in context with a medium of storing knick-knacks has pretty much been re-written to mean the plastic box and with good reason. Plastic boxes are used to restore order to messy rooms and offices across the globe. The famous 3 Box Approach to fixing up any amount of paper clutter in the office makes use of three plastic boxes labelled the Inbox, the Outbox as well as the Drafts - much like todays email programs which happen to have borrowed terminology from this system originally.

Freight companies have used them since they became available and consumer courier companies like FedEx and UPS have started using plastic containers and boxes made out of recycled materials. The reason that they are doing so is best understand in the words of Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx. 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.' Reduce the number of inefficiencies in the shipping system by getting custom sized plastic boxes that fit into every nook and cranny of the plane. Reuse as many plastic packaging as we can retrieve and use only recycled plastic for everything that needs something stronger than cardboard.

Every mother knows how much of a mess her children can create when they are left alone with their toys and she is the one who has to clean it all up. What you could do is get a couple of large storage boxes (do I even need to tell you what kind anymore? Plastic ones, in case you forgot) and teach them the value of putting their things back into the box. These boxes are very kid safe in that there are no sharp edges or heavy bases that you need to worry about. It is pretty much impossible for your young one to hurt themselves when playing with one of these boxes.

Boxes made out of food grade plastic are also great in the kitchen. they can be used to stock up on veggies, as tiffin boxes, to store leftovers from last night, extra spoons, condiments that you bought in bulk and the like. This list is pretty much endless mind you. A famous brand that comes to mind when one thinks of food management and storage utensils is Tupperware.

But so many choices!

The very reason why plastic boxes are perfect for pretty much every reason works against them when it comes to making the choice of which one to buy. The easiest way to decide is to first figure out what you need to use a plastic box for. The following table details which plastic box is best used for which task.

Types of plastic storage boxes

Great article. However, the reality is, like different pairs of black socks, in short order every house soon has 8 or 10 different styles of boxes. The worst part of this it that they don't work together because they won't stack together.

An idea for Rubbermaid or some other major supplier - A Lifetime Storage "system"!

I wish there was a company out there that would promise to consistently produce a standardized range of storage boxes. Instead the boxes I bought a few yrs ago are no longer available so I'm now buying something else and of course they don't stack together, don't look the same etc.

A company could target 20 yr olds saying - buy our "premium" brand boxes and for the rest of your life you'll be able to get the same product. They'll always stack together, nest together and always work for you!!!
